Missing npptools.dll in Windows 7

25Nov09

I found this problem when I want to instal Metasploit Framework (MSF) in my Win7 box.  And today I experienced the same problem when I install GNS3 in the same box. The dialog box said

“The application failed to start as system is unable to locate npptools.dll. Re-installing the application may correct this problem.”

Then what is this component related to? This npptools.dll is a part of NetMon (Network Monitor). Network Monitor 3.1 is a protocol analyzer. It allows you to capture network traffic, but unfortunately both of NetMon and npptools.dll are no longer part of Windows since Vista came out. In some cases, this kind of problem can be solved by installing NetMon, but in my case, I don’t want to install NetMon, so I just search another methods to solve this problem.

Then, I just simply use an old method by copying the npptools.dll to WinDir (C:\Windows\System32) directory. You can get the copy of this file here. Then, voila! It works like a charm! I can continue “ngoprek” in my box again!

Happy Ngoprek!!
